SAINT GEORGE BLITZ HAVE
UNEXPECTED DIFFICULTY VERSUS VISITING COWBOYS; PREVAIL BEHIND FIELDS’
PASSING/RUNNING
SAINT GEORGE – Quarterbacks are not just a “passing fancy” in Saint George, Utah.
As it turns out, the nature of a Saint George Blitz quarterback is to run. Whether it was Wes Marshal, Josh Smith or Mike Corey in 2009 or Diarra Fields in 2010, the Blitz quarterbacks will take off.
Take off is what the Blitz’ Diarra Fields did, leading his team to a 26-6 victory over the visiting Davis Cowboys in their regular season home opener on Saturday.
Fields passed for 167 yards and rushed for 109 yards, including two touchdowns to lead the Saint George Offense. Fields scored the Blitz’ first two touchdowns to give them a 12-0 halftime lead. Blitz tight end, Andy Stokes, was also a chief contributor, to the offense, catching 7 passes for 105 yards to lead all receivers on what was truly a quarterback, rushing exhibition.
Even Cowboys quarterback, Junior Cole, got into the act. Cole’s scrambling and rushing WAS the entire offense for the Cowboys, taking off for 14 rushes and 110 yards. He ultimately set up the Cowboys only score late in the game, a touchdown pass to David Fuentez of 24 yards. Will Boldin did catch 5 passes for 61 yards to lead Cowboy receivers.
Ultimately, however, it was a defensive battle.
The Blitz defense continued to mount pressure, including 4 quarterback sacks and 5 turnovers, including 3 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries. Pagi Popo lead the team with 6-1/2 tackles, including one of the sacks and Isaac Smith recorded 5-1/2 tackles and one of the interceptions to pace the secondary. Blitz cornerback, Robbie Dias, capped the Blitz scoring eve, by returning an interception 35-yards for a score to get the defense “on the board” in 2010. The Cowboys defense was stellar, too. Not only did they only allow 19 Blitz offensive points on the road, but were a constant presence in the Blitz backfield, accounting for 4 sacks and an interception by Cody Barry. Barry would also pick up 2 sacks included in his 7 tackles, second only to Andrew Robinson, who had 8. Highly touted running back, coming over from the Bears, Johnny Gray, played primarily defense, getting 5 tackles and a sack for the Cowboy defense.
Ultimately, the game proved to be much more difficult than expected as the Blitz must now prepare for a visit from the 2008 Champion, Utah Bears. The Cowboys will get a chance to see if their early solid play will continue on now, very winnable road game to Jerome, Idaho against the Magic Valley Bulldawgs.
