KJAR TOSSES 5 TD’S AS
UTAH SHOCK CRASH DESPERADO’S UNDEFEATED PARTY 34-14
PROVO – Jordan Kjar passed for 281 yards and 5 touchdown, including 81 yards and two scores to his brother, Chad Kjar, as the Utah Shock recovered from their first loss of the season to run a 20-0 halftime lead into a 34-14 victory over the Utah Valley Desperados.
After trading possessions for most of the 1st quarter, Kjar finally finished a drive by finding Matt Thornton from 22 yards out to get the Shock on the board with 3:46 left to play in the first quarter. The Shock defense, which forced 4 Desperado turnovers (2 fumbles, 2 interceptions) would get the ball back quickly for the defending offensive MVP and he would make them pay with the first touchdown strike to Chad Kjar, a 36-yard pass play with 1:38 remaining in the first to give the Shock an early 13-0 lead.
Desperado quarterback, James Fountaine, however, was not without success against the Shock defense, passing for 231 yards and two late 4th quarter scores to Bryce Morris (5 receptions, 96 yards, 2 td’s) to give the Desperados hope and some late momentum, however, his two interceptions, two team fumbles and losing yards on 5 sacks reversed many early opportunities and plagued the Desperados for more than 3 quarters to set up the Shock for an easier victory.
Five Shock receivers would catch at least 3 passes, Chad Kjar (5), Colby Cook (4), Chris Hooper (4), Josh Christensen (4) and Matt Thornton (3) as Kjar saw the field well against the newly AAA promoted Desperados. Christensen would have a fine rushing day, picking up 50 yards on only 11 carries.
Former RMFL defensive MVP, Matt Shoda, lead the Desperado rushing attack with 48 yards on 10 carries, however, a combination of 8 other ball carriers could only muster 48 more yards as a Shock front seven, lead by the emergence of Kevin Slater (8 tackles, 1-1/2 sacks) lead the way for the black and gold. Stephen Pizza would record 6-1/2 tackles, Kyto Khouangrasvongsay 5-1/2 and Troy Peterson would get in for 2 sacks as the Shock shut out the Desperados for 3-1/2 quarters.
Back playing full-time defense, Roger Shulze lead the Desperado defense with 9-1/2 tackles Aaron Smith had 6-1/2, however, the inability to get turnovers of their own, or get Kjar behind the line of scrimmage (0 sacks) contributed to the Shocks ability to move the ball and score early, gaining the big halftime lead that would hold up.
The Shock (2-1) now travel further south for the much talked about match-up with the Saint George Blitz (3-0) as the Desperados (2-1) who suffered only their first loss after beating the winless Wolverines and Vikings in their first two contests, now face the other winless team, the Magic Valley Bulldawgs (0-3) at home.
