SPARTANS PARLAY BIG PLAYS, SPECIAL TEAMS AND DEFENSE TO 32-8 VICTORY OVER UNDER-RATED DAVIS COWBOYS

LAYTON – Chris Bisgaard threw 3 touchdown passes, including 2 to Jovan Lincoln in a span of 9 minutes of the first half, as the Treasure Valley Spartans maintained their relentless grip on first place in the AAA with a decisive, albeit not dominating victory over the Davis Cowboys in Utah on Saturday, 32-8.

After a flurry of 1^st quarter scores within the final 5 minutes of the period by the Spartans, the game settled into a defensive battle throughout.

Bisgaard found Lincoln on an electrifying 86-yard catch and run to get things started late in the first quarter. A partially blocked punt and high winds contributed to a special teams miscue by the Cowboys on the next possession and Brad Allen was the recipient of a “gift” taking the blocked punt out of the air and trotting in from just outside the Cowboy end zone for a Spartan 13-0 lead. After a turnover and a short field, Bisgaard then connected with Britt Hall on his only reception of the day for an 8-yard scoring pass as the Spartans made it 19-0 before the end of the first quarter. Bisgaard connected with Lincoln again, early in the 2^nd quarter, this time from 64-yards out as the Spartans jumped out early 26-0. Like Hall, the only passes Lincoln would catch were the two touchdown daggers into the hearts of the Cowboys.

Then… the defenses would take over.

Although, at home, the Cowboys offense came to life for the first time in 2010, with quarterback, Junior Cole passing for almost 200 yards (197), including 163 of them and a touchdown to Trevor Evans who would catch 12 passes on the day against a highly touted Spartan secondary.

Of course, it was not enough. Six turnovers (5 fumbles, 1 interception) and 8 sacks would be the ultimate undoing of most of the Cowboy offensive hopes.

The Spartans would got to Cole for the 8 sacks, negating many of the passing yardage, including 3-1/2 by RMFL tackles leader, Zac Jockumsen, who also lead the team with 10 tackles on the day. Brad Allen would add 7 tackles and an interception to go along with his special teams touchdown and Zacq Hale would return a Cowboy fumble 60-yards for a touchdown late in the 3^rd quarter to cap the scoring by the Spartans, giving them the 32-8 lead that would stand throughout a wind-swept 4^th quarter.

But the Cowboy defense may have earned the greatest credit of all.

If not for the two long touchdown passes to Lincoln, the Spartans offense would have only mustered 40 total net yards, including only 12 total net rushing yards. Dangerous all-star running back, Anthony Pomerlee, rushed for only 4 yards on 8 carries as the Spartan rushing attack was completely stifled. Leading the Cowboy charge were Cody Barry and Victor McKenzie who lead a Cowboy team that also forced 3 turnovers, 2 interceptions and a fumble recovery that was key in checking a Spartan offense that had scored 60 points on Wolverines the week before, however, was unable to muster an offensive touchdown in their opening win at home against the defending champion, Revolution.

The Spartans now return home to face a struggling Upper Valley Vikings team (0-3) as the Cowboys stay home to play a hungry Bears team (2-1) who dropped their first game at Saint George.
