BEARS MAKE A STATEMENT
OF SURPRMACY, HUMBLING MAGIC VALLEY 42-17
JEROME – Could it be that all the Bears needed was a quarterback? After struggling to defend their RMFL title in 2009, the Utah Bears opened up the 2010 season as if 2009 never happened, behind the stellar play of newly acquired quarterback, Jeff Wissler, who tossed 6 touchdown passes, 3 to Joe Mapson, en route to a 42-17, outscoring the Bulldawgs 22-0 in the second half to cruise to victory.
Wissler joined the Bears from the folding Utah Heat while Mapson left the Utah Wolverines after 3 season via free agency and now both may be headlining a Bears team that will be a major force in the AAA in 2010.
Wissler tossed for 385 yards, however, did toss 2 interceptions to keep his day from being perfect and Mapson caught 8 passes for 146 yards as the duo became the early front-runners for offensive MVP’s. Bears tight end, Ben Moa, also caught 8 passed for another 140 yards and 2 touchdowns to finish a close second to Mapson in electrification of the scoreboard. Former Salt Lake Seminole, Spoon Moala, also in his Bears debut, lead the rushing offense for the Bears, rushing 12 times for 77 yards as the Bears dominated the second half.
For the Bulldawgs, it wasn’t all doom and gloom as they played the 2008 champions quite tough through the first half, drawing to a meager 20-17 deficit at the intermission behind some hard running, including two touchdown runs by Jesse Zedalis, including a 46-yard score near the end of the first half that put a charge in the Bulldawg sidelines and fans, keeping the game within 3 until late in the 3rd quarter. Zedalis would finish with a modest 58 yards on 12 carries, however, was able to take advantage of good field position on several occasions as the Bears turned it over to the Bulldawgs 4 times on the evening, 2 fumbles lost and two interceptions to keep the Bulldawgs in the game early.
Terrance Johnson lead the Bulldawg defense with 6 tackles and one of the interceptions and Beau Lockwood recovered both Bears fumbles as the Bulldawgs just ran out of steam in the second half.
For the top-ranked Bears defense, another stellar performance was turned in by Manu Taeoalii, who lead the team with 4 tackles and a sack. Jeremy Crookston, Stan Vrotney and Dan Sundstrom would also pitch in for 4 tackles, with Sandstrom adding an interception against Bulldawg quarterback, Ben Landrian, who struggled against the Bears defense to throw for only 52 yards and a 26.5 passer rating.
