UTAH SHOCK START SLOW,
BUT FINISH STRONG IN 41-10 ROUTE OF UPPER VALLEY VIKINGS
TERRETON, IDAHO – It just took a while for the Utah Shock offense to wake up.
Playing the first game in RMFL history in the sleepy town of Terreton, Idaho (pop. ~200), the vaunted Utah Shock offense just couldn’t get it going… at first. However, by midway through the second quarter, RMFL Offensive MVP, Jordan Kjar, and the Shock offense was firing on all cylinders en route to a 41-10 victory over the gamely, Upper Valley Vikings in their home opener.
After exchanging punts twice, Shock quarterback, Kjar (pronounced “care”) broke loose on an option play and knifed through the Viking defense for a 44-yard score. However, on the ensuing kick-off, Viking defensive back and return specialist, Micheal Chamblerlain, zig-zagged his way down the field for an 87-yard kick-off return. After a made conversion by Braxton Mouser, the heavy underdog, Vikings were leading the game at the end of the first quarter.
It was not, however, to last.
Kjar (22-31-1-378-4) capped a short field drive with a touchdown strike to his favorite 2009 target, Matt Thornton, and the Shock did not look back. The first half ended with the Shock ahead, however, by a 20-10 margin. Two 3rd quarter touchdown passes later, the Shock had moved up by 34-10 and the route was on.
As usual, Kjar lead all Shock rushes in yards, carrying 6 times for 66 yards (and the touchdown). The Shock were happy to get Josh Christensen back fulltime, however, and he was his usual workhorse self, rushing for 46 yards on 9 carries in the Shock, pass-happy offense. Colby Cook lead all Shock receivers with 5 receptions for 122 yards and the touchdown. Chad Kjar, who saw significant playing time after an early minor injury to Matt Thornton, finished second with 5 receptions for 95 yards. The Shock were also happy to welcome back Chris Liddiard, who caught 6 passes for 83 yards and a score on his first game back after a 2009 injury sidelined him for the season.
Overall, the Shock defense put the clamps down on an anemic Viking offense, holding the Viking quarterbacks (Will Fairbanks and Cody Crittendon) to a combined 6-20 and 81 yards and an interception against no touchdowns. Ali Goljamofrad caught two of those passes for 55 yards to lead the receivers. Perhaps the biggest shining star on the Vikings offense was Russell Singleton, who rushed 7 times for 52 yards, a solid 7.5 yard per carry average to give the Vikings something to build upon as they dive into their AAA schedule. The Vikings could also feel good about playing an opportunistic Shock defense in which they only had one turnover the entire game.
Leading the Shock defense was Stephen Pizza, who recorded 8 tackles, including a sack and newly anointed defensive line starter, Julian Delanese, picked up 4 tackles and the other sack as the Shock defense was just not on the field much, forcing numerous 3-and-outs on the Viking offense.
The Viking defense, however, was not without its stars. Unfortunately, it was the Vikings secondary getting most of the tackles, which is never a good sign for a defense. Cornerbacks, Micheal Chamberlain and Eugine Tuioti-Mariner recorded 7 tackles each. Safeties, Matt Landon and Kirk Smith, had 5 and 4 respectively as the Vikings could stop the Shock for a while, something positive, but not long enough to grab a home victory.
