BIG PLAY FROM SHULZE
ALLOW DESPERADOS TO “RUN” TO VICTORY PAST IMPROVED WOLVERINES
SPRINGVILLE – The Upwardly mobile (moved from AA division to AAA division this season) Utah Valley Desperados passed their first big test, at home, against the resurgent Utah Wolverines Saturday, escaping with a 29-16 victory behind a strong running game and an electrifying 75-yard interception return by RMFL veteran linebacker, Roger Shulze to help steal victory from the clenches of defeat.
After falling behind 16-14 at halftime, Roger Shulze made the play that turned the game around, stepping in front of a Hans Hatchett (former teammate) pass and sprinting 75-yards, the Desperados pulled ahead… and let their defense take it from there.
The Wolverines enjoyed some modest success throughout as well, both on defense and offense in playing the Desperados tough in this contest. Consecutive, unanswered touchdowns near the end of the 2nd quarter seemed to have the Wolverines riding high towards their first victory of the season… a key game in turning their fortunes around; fortunes that saw them not more than 2 seasons ago falling a 3rd overtime short of an RMFL title.
Offensively, the Desperados struggled at times as quarterback, James Fountaine, managed completing only 5 of 14 passes for 36 yards, however, two of them scoring passes (to J.D. Dawson). It was the running game, lead by I.K. Ubani (8 carries, 61 yards) and a couple of big runs by Mike Simpkins (29 yards, touchdown) and George Uyema (25 yards), mustered just enough offense… combined with the big Shulze defensive touchdown to merit the victory.
For the Wolverines, many positives were seen.
The Wolverine offense was productive to more than 300 total net yards (184 passing, 122 rushing) as Hatchett had a solid day at quarterback. Running back, Smoke Laloni, ran well at running back (16 carries, 66 yards) and Dominic Cagle and Tyson Wagner had good days receiving as Hatchett completed passes to 6 different receivers as the Wolverine offense looked improved from 2009.
Defensively, the Desperados did “bend… but not break”, particularly in the second half as Jason Hermanson lead the team with 5 tackles in holding the Wolverines at bay through the entire second half, making room for Shulze’s heroics and a late touchdown run by Mike Simpkins to “seal” the victory. The Wolverine defense had plenty to feel good about and kept the team in the game until the back-breaking run by Simpkins, including a safety scored by Manaia Brown. Chris Rosales became a front-runners for the league tackle title, picking up 9 on the game and Dante Dagostini recorded 6.
Both teams hit the road in week 2. The Wolverines must travel to Boise to face a Spartan team that just took down the reigning RMFL Champions and the Desperados go up to Idaho to face the Upper Valley Vikings, hungry for their first home victory.
