SAINT GEORGE BLITZ RIDE EARLY HOME FIELD SCHEDULE TO BLITZ PAST BEARS AND INTO FIRST PLACE IN AAA DIVISION

SAINT GEORGE – The Saint George Blitz felt right at “home” as they took on a charging “Bear” from northern Utah. Riding a great defensive effort against perhaps the #1 defensive team in the RMFL, the Saint George Blitz forced 5 turnovers and recorded 6 quarterback sacks to lead to scores and scoring opportunities as they repelled a confident Bears team 34-12 at home Saturday night.

Isaac Smith lead the Blitz defense with 7 tackles and 3 sacks in keeping the Bears newly recharged offense at bay.

Appropriately, the Blitz jumped up on the Bears first when Wayne Alofipo scooped up a loose football and raced 50-yards to paydirt in the first quarter to give the Blitz the early 7-0 lead. Blitz quarterback, Diarra Fields (12-22-0-150-2) would run it over from 4-yards out and Stephen Pulver would add the first of two field goals to give the Blitz a 17-0 lead… all off defense or short fields set up by a turnover. The Bears would get field goals late in the second and third quarters and Bear quarterback, Jeff Wissler (15-26-3-248-1), would finally connect big time with Joe Mapson for a 65-yard score in the 4th quarter, however, it was too little too late as the Blitz seemed in control throughout the contest.

Offensively for the Blitz, Fields had a strong performance, that included 150 yards passing against no interceptions and two second half touchdowns to Ricky Dias (56, 26 yards) to salt the game away in the second half.   Fields also lead all rushers with 9 carries for only 25 yards as the Bear defense once again proved tough, but could not seem to keep the Blitz out of the end zone while defending short fields. The Bears defense was generally impressive, except for giving up the big 56-yard touchdown play to Ricky Dias in the third quarter that would put the Blitz ahead 24-3 at the time.  Dias would lead his team with 92 total yards on 5 receptions and the two scores.

For the Bears, Mapson was a human-highlight reel, once again. Mapson caught 8 passes for 213 of Wissler’s 248 passing yards, but could only find the end zone for the one score, which turned out to be just not enough. Wissler, who had good total numbers, did not have his best performance in his storied RMFL career, being victimized by 3 interceptions and being harassed by the Saint George blitzing scheme that has kept many quarterbacks off balance, especially in Saint George.

Except for one big play, the vaunted Bears defense was all of that, shutting down the Blitz run game and defending well against the pass.  Dan Sundstrom and Levine Tupe lead the Bears defense with 7 and 5 tackles respectively, however, the Bears just could not match the Blitz in turnovers or quarterback sacks/pressures and it turned out to be their undoing in the long road trip to southern Utah.
