VICTOR MCKENZIE’S DEFENSIVE GEMS LEAD COWBOYS OVER BULLDAWGS ON THE ROAD

JEROME – Davis Cowboy linebacker, Victor McKenzie pulled off something that had never been accomplished before.  Three defensive touchdowns in a single game… all the scoring the Davis Cowboys needed (and got) as the defense held the hometown Bulldawgs to a lone third quarter touchdown and held on for a 19-6 victory in Jerome, Idaho.

With both offenses struggling early and often, McKenzie thwarted the Bulldawgs first scoring opportunity by scooping up a Bulldawg fumble and out-running Magic Valley pursuit for a 75-yard touchdown return to get the Cowboys on the board.  He would follow that with a second quarter fumble return and a third quarter spectacular interception return that would vault the Cowboys ahead 19-0.

The Magic Valley offense was particularly challenged in this contest, not even amassing 100 total net yards on the day as the Cowboy defense not only scored three times, but added a couple of quarterback sacks and an interception to complete a stifling performance.  McKenzie was the true star of the game, even recording 7 total tackles, second only to Barry Cody who recorded 8 tackles, including a sack as the Bulldawgs struggled to move the ball.

Midway through the third quarter, after good field position after the last McKenzie touchdown and a few nice plays, the Bulldawgs were able to punch across for a score on a 3-yard Jess Zedalis run to keep the Bulldawgs from being shut out. Zedalis would end up with 30 rushing yards, the most total yards from scrimmage by any Bulldawg player.

Cowboy quarterback, Junior Cole, showed some signs of improvement, passing for 87 yards and rushing for 89 yards on 11 carries to lead all players, including a 28-yard scamper. Trevor Evans lead the wide receivers with 54 yards on 3 catches, however, the Cowboys offense was unable to score any offensive points and will need to improve as a daunting AAA schedule looms.

The game marked a clear step for the much maligned Davis Cowboys, who proved they could travel, play well and win and will now have 4 consecutive home games, including two against top level teams, Treasure Valley and the Utah Bears.
