REVOLUTION GAIN CHAMPIONSHP
GAME REMATCH VICTORY IN DEFENSIVE SLUGFEST WITH UTAH SHOCK 17-7
SALT LAKE CITY – In the final quarter of the 2009 RMFL Championship game, the Utah Shock and Wasatch Revolution combined for 32 points… JUST IN ONE QUARTER.
With perhaps the two most explosive offenses in the RMFL teeing off at Jordan High School Saturday night, almost everyone expected more of the same.
Expectations were not met.
However, what was expected was a tight, hotly-contested football game… and that it was…
A game that featured the top two quarterbacks in the RMFL from 2009 saw zero touchdown passes, as the defending champion, Wasatch Revolution, bounced back from a week #1 loss at the Treasure Valley Spartans to down the Utah Shock, 17-7 in front of a crowd of 300 excited spectators.
The Revolution’s, Clayton Wolf, jumped in front of a Jordan Kjar pass and raced 42 yards to the opening score at the start of the second quarter for the first score of the game. That would be the only score of the game until the Revolution’s star quarterback, Charlie Peterson, dove across from 1-yard out with 11 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Revolution a semi-comfortable 14-0 halftime lead.
The lead was only “semi-comfortable” since their opponents sported the most wide-open, explosive offense in the RMFL. An offense, however, that was stymied at every turn by an aggressive, highly charged Revolution defense that held the Shock under 200 total net yards on the game and only one, penalty-aided offensive score late in the third quarter. Casey Sutera and Justin Walker paced the Revolution defense with 5 tackles each, Sutera garnering a sack and Walker adding a half sack to add to his league-leading total heading into the weekend. But it was the stifling team defense that forced 5 turnovers (3 interceptions, two by Wolf, 2 fumble recoveries) and 4 sacks that kept the Revolution in control of the game.
The Revolution offense, however, was equally as pedestrian. Charlie Peterson would pass for only 146 yards with no receivers capping out for more than 40. Perry Laulu of Wasatch would lead all running backs (both teams) with only 34 yards on 7 total carries. The Shock defense was lead by Stephen Pizza (6 tackles) and Kevin and Josh Slater (5 tackles and 3 sacks respectively) in doing an equally effective job in keeping the Revolution under 200 yards of total offense.
The defensive dominance in the game over-shadowed the side stories involved in this emotion-pitched defensive battle. The Revolution’s, Matt Stroshine, became so “involved” that he keyed the only Shock scoring drive with two of three unsportsmanlike conduct penalties (45 yards total) and was ultimately ejected from the game for threatening contact of a game official. Shock quarterback, Jordan Kjar (16-28-3-160-0) would complete the drive with a 2-yard run to pull the Shock to within the final margin of 17-7.
If the two teams do face off again in the 2010 playoffs, it will not be a game to miss.
