ANTHONY POMERLEE CARRIES SPARTANS THROUGH EARLY SCARE FROM WOLVERINES TO 60-20 ROUTE

(taken, in part, from Treasure Valley Web Site)

EMMITT - The AAA Treasure Valley Spartans came into Saturday night's contest with the Utah Wolverines expected to win.  Win they did, defeating the Utah Wolverines by a score of 60 - 20.

The Spartan offense came alive in the first quarter as Spartan running back, Bob Daniels, scored from 5 yards out after a long sustained drive.  The Spartan defense held strong, forcing three and out after three and out.  Following a forced Wolverines punt QB Chris Bisgaard found the speedy Jovan Lincoln streaking down the field for a 39 yard TD play.  Down 14 - 0 the Wolverines would not go quietly into the night.

The Wolverines’ Dominick Cagle returned the ensuing kick-off 100 yards for a TD to bring the score to 14-7.  However, as the Wolverines kicked the ball back to the Spartans, Jovan Lincoln returned the favor taking the kick back 75 yards for a TD.  After another forced Wolverine punt, the Spartans would give the Wolverines a bit more life, as Bryson Hayward picked off Bisgaard and returned it for a second Wolverines touchdown, drawing them to within 7 again at 21-14.

For a moment… there was “concern”.

With the score 21 - 14 in favor of the Spartans, the home team decided it was a bit too close, however; and, behind all-star running back, Anthony Pomerlee, the scoring frenzy began.

In a span of 7 minutes in the second quarter, Spartan RB Anthony Pomerlee would run for three TDS from 7, 47 and 10 yards out.  The Spartans took a sizeable lead into the half.

After halftime, the scoring continued.  The 3rd quarter would see the Spartans score three more times.  Nate Cone replaced Bisgaard at QB and threw for two TDs, hitting Jovan Lincoln (3 TDs) for 32 yards and Britt Hall for 14 yards.  To set up the final TD, DB Kevin Bekker would seek and destroy the Wolverine QB, forcing a fumble which was recovered by Ryan Weaver. Bob Daniels, who started the scoring, then took a pitch, made a great cut and went flying into the endzone from 16 yards out to end the scoring for the Spartans.  The 3rd quarter held the final score 60 - 20.

Due to the score, the 4th quarter held a running clock and relatively no action.  The Wolverines beat a busted coverage as DB Dane Knickrehm was caught looking in the backfield on a great play by QB Hans Hatchett to score their only offensive points of the game.

The game would see great play by many Spartan players.  The offensive line was solid, opening holes for Spartan runner to accumulate over 250 yards rushing.  The Spartan defense would play well which showed in the total number of tackles for the team (32).  Ryan Weaver lead the defense with 4.5 tackles.  CB Zacq Hale had a great game, deflecting several passes and making key hits on Wolverine players.

Tyson Wagner lead the Wolverines in yards with 71 receiving yards and Smoke Laloni lead the Wolverine rushing game with a solid 56 yards on 9 carries.  Michael Murphy and Bryson Hayward lead the defense with 5 tackles a piece, however, the Wolverine defense just did not have an answer for Pomerlee on the evening, who ultimately rushed for a career best 198 yards on 14 carries and just seemed un-tackle-able.
